Ex-cop jailed for bribery

A FORMER cop who took bribes in the form of cash and companionship of a nightclub hostess was sentenced to a total of nine months' jail on Friday. Tan Chee Kwong, 35, was ordered to pay a penalty of $1,732, which is equivalent to the bribes he took in 2006 and 2007. Tan, who pleaded guilty to two corruption charges and one under the Computer Misuse Act, was a staff sergeant attached to the Violent Crime Section of Bedok police division at the time. He quit after 10 years' service and was last working as an operation and business supervisor.

The court heard that Tan was in financial difficulties when he accepted $1,000 from Chua Chin Hoe, an illegal gambling operator and secret society headman, in July 2006. Mr Chua had admitted that he did not expect the cop to return him the money as he did not want him to cause any trouble for his illegal gambling outlets. The following year, Tan started alerting Mr Chua to impending raids on illegal gambling outlets as he felt beholden to him for accepting the $1,000 bribe.

On July 8, 2006, Tan accepted a bribe in the form of companionship with a nightclub hostess costing $150 in a nightclub from suspected illegal cough syrup peddler Loh Chien Wei. In return, Tan provided Loh with information on police raids in Geylang. In March 2007, Tan helped a colleague's friend to check the residential address of his daughter from his first marriage by logging onto the Singapore Police Force's Crimes2 system.
