A former bus driver was jailed for one month and banned from driving for five years on Monday for causing the death of a pedestrian and injuring another.
Tan Chin Thiam, 66, was driving an SBS Transit bus at the signalised cross-junction of Hougang Central and Upper Serangoon Road on Dec 27 last year when he failed to give way to Mr Ng Lim Hou, 76, and his Indonesian maid while making a right turn, thus hitting the two at the pedestrian crossing.
Mr Ng was seriously injured and died of a head injury that evening. The Indonesian maid, Ms Jumroh, 25, escaped with superficial injuries.
Tan, who pleaded guilty to both charges on Sept 9, had a previous conviction for careless driving. He could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act. For causing hurt, he could have been jailed for up to six months and/or fined up to $2,500.
