A former SBS Transit bus captain was jailed for a week and banned from driving for three years on Thursday for causing a cyclist's death through his negligence.
Toh Khai Huat, 60, pleaded guilty to causing Malaysian Tan Kian Eang's death at the signalised junction of Jalan Boon Lay on May 3.
He was making a right turn from International Road into Jalan Boon Lay when he hit the 45-year-old cyclist travelling in the opposite direction at around midnight.
The court heard that Toh, who has been driving buses for 36 years, had ended his shift and was heading towards Jurong East bus interchange to park his vehicle when the accident happened.
As he approached the junction of Jalan Boon Lay by International Road, he proceeded to turn right without slowing down or stopping at the right turn "pocket'' of the junction.
