A maid was on Friday fined $2,600 for shoplifting costume jewellery and other items a day before she was due to return to India to get married.
Her former employer paid the fine for her, saying 'she is a good person who did something foolish, and I wanted to help her to move on in her life'.
A district court heard that Sandeep Kaur, a 32-year-old Indian national, stole items including a sweater, handbag and costume jewellery from five shops at nex mall in Serangoon Central. The total value of the items was $255.
A district court heard that at 4.15pm on Nov 14, Kaur was seen by an Isetan store employee carrying out a handbag valued at $49.90 without paying for it.
