Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Assistant Professor Eugene Tan, Nominated MP, contradicted what LG (NS) Kuek said about the open channels of communications SMRT has with their SLs, “When you look at the SMRT incident, it reflects a failure in industrial relations. The issue has been brewing for a while and obviously it would seem that the workers didn’t have sufficient channel for their grievances to be addressed and they have taken the rather drastic action of staging an illegal strike. In a way the illegal strike has worked. It has brought their grievances out publicly.”

There was no failure in industrial relations. The deal was signed and sealed before they even set foot in the country.

This is a straightforward case of dishonoring a written agreement. The whole damned lot should be caned, jailed and sued for breach of contract and then kicked out of the country for good.

Singapore can do without these scumbags.

You are right. There are no industrial relations to start with. So there is nothing to talk about failure except maybe there is a failure of no industrial relations. Welcome to Singapore, the pirate port rock.

How come MOM so lenient to domestic maids who ran off to their embassies n from there demand to be repatriated back home even when they have not completed their employment contracts? Even maids who stole n got convicted get free airticket home. Employers must cough up with their airticket n lost paid up insurance plus agency recruitment fees etc. MOM can even cite law requiring employers to pay for the airticket!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Why disparity in the law or the way different employees are handled?????

Only dumb sinkees like you will think that an agreement will be honoured by all in all situations and ignore realities of the business world.
