Russia is "actively redirecting its trade flows," Vladimir Putin has told a meeting of BRICS countries, while China's Xi has warned of "expanding military alliances."
Russian President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Moscow was in the process of redirecting its trade and oil exports to BRICS countries as a result of Western sanctions. The BRICS group comprises Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. Their economies account for more than 40% of the global population and nearly a quarter of the world's gross domestic product.
After Russia's invasion of Ukraine on February 24, the West imposed sweeping sanctions, including restrictions on imports of Russian oil.
In order to weather the sanctions, Russia is trying to forge closer ties with Asia to replace the markets it lost in the EU and the US.
