To eat or not to eat egg, that is the question

.For years, we grew up with the knowledge that eating egg yolks increased one's risk of heart attack and stroke.

But sometime in the 1990s, this idea was labeled as a "myth" by the Health Professionals Follow-up Study and the Nurse's Health Study. Both researches stated that consuming one egg per day had little or no impact on cardiovascular health. The world rejoiced and proceeded to have their omelets and sunny-side ups.

Today, the tables have turned 180-degrees.

Decreases blood flow to vital organs

Dr. J. David Spence of the Robarts Research Institute in London has data to show that lifelong consumption of egg yolks increased the development of blocked arteries in patients at risk of heart disease.

The results showed the formation of blood vessel plaques measuring 125 mm2 for patients consuming less than 2 eggs per week. The plaque size increased to 132 mm2 for subjects who ate 3 or more egg yolks per week.

The vascular plaques are responsible for decreasing the blood flow to vital organs like the heart and the brain. Continuous increase in diameter of these plaques will eventually lead to total blockage of blood flow causing a heart attack or a stroke.

Dr. Spence further points out that a single egg yolk contains 275 mg of cholesterol, which is more than the recommended daily allowance for cholesterol of 200 mg a day.

Dispute

The Egg Nutrition Center in the U.S. is not impressed by these results. Their executive director, Dr. Mitch Kanter says the study "is not well done" He says the subjects were all elderly and were naturally at higher risk of cardiovascular disease.

Dr. Spence expected this criticism from the egg Industry and replies, " Every time a paper like this comes out … the egg marketers come out with their own statements. No wonder the public is confused."

This debate will go on and on with no end in sight.

The "egg magnates" have millions to lose if this latest data proves true while Dr. Spence has nothing to gain but the good health and well-being of his patients.

What else can be said but … "let the buyer beware."

in moderation should be ok la bro....if you wallop egg eggs a day = 56 eggs per week ...then ur farts would be eggtremely smelly.

Tks.

A high blood cholesterol level increases your risk for atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. Atherosclerosis, in turn, increases your risk of high blood pressure, heart attack and stroke. Eggs are full of nutrition, but the yolk is high in cholesterol. Because of this, excess consumption of whole eggs can be a contributing factor for high blood cholesterol, although saturated fat in the diet is also to blame.

Cholesterol

Your body needs cholesterol for vitamin D synthesis and to make hormones. Lipoproteins, made of fat on the inside and protein on the outside, transport cholesterol throughout your body. Low-density lipoprotein, or LDL, is often called “bad” cholesterol. A high level of LDL increases cardiovascular disease risk by contributing to cholesterol buildup in your arteries. High-density lipoprotein, called HDL or “good” cholesterol, helps lower cardiovascular disease risk by removing unused cholesterol from your arteries and transporting it to your liver to be broken down. Your body makes all the cholesterol it needs, but you also consume it in foods from animal sources, including egg yolks.

Eggs offer a lot of nutrition in a small package. One egg contains 71 calories, 55 of them in the yolk. An egg white provides 3.6 g of protein; an egg yolk has 2.7 g. The nearly 5 g of fat are almost all in the yolk, but only 1.6 g are saturated. An egg yolk contains 100 to 200 mg of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids. Except for vitamin C, a whole egg contains nearly every essential vitamin and mineral. The yolk also contains lutein and zeaxanthin, nutrients that help lower your risk of heart disease and age-related macular degeneration.

The Downside of Eggs

The bad news is that one large egg contains 213 mg of cholesterol, all of which is in the yolk. If you are healthy, you should limit your intake of dietary cholesterol to less than 300 mg per day. If you have cardiovascular disease, diabetes or a high LDL level, you should lower that to less than 200 mg. The Nurses’ Health Study and the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study found an increase in the risk of heart disease among diabetics who ate one or more eggs a day.

Recommendations

Healthy people can safely eat one whole egg a day, but eating more can increase heart disease risk later in life. People with diabetes or cardiovascular disease should eat no more than three whole eggs per week. When calculating consumption, take into account that eggs can be in other foods, such as baked goods and pasta. When making recipes calling for eggs, substitute two egg whites for one egg to eliminate the cholesterol in the yolk. Use egg whites in omelets and scrambled eggs, or buy a cholesterol-free egg substitute. Just as important as reducing your consumption of egg yolks is reducing or eliminating the bacon, sausage and fried potatoes, all high in saturated fat, that often accompany eggs.

If Sylvester Stallone says eggs are good for you, you should listen to him.

People should stop blaming nutritious food for poor health. Instead, they should blame themselves for a lack of discipline to go out and exercise. No, strolling in the park or stadium while playing with your smartphone does not count.

Once, many moons ago, my good old doctor, gave me a diet plan, forgotten the name, something about not eating more than 8 eggs a week & some others.. I asked the good old doctor, my two 'eggs' counted?, he gave me a queer look!

The debate on to eat or not to eat, had been going on for ages, I was told, if eat, exclude the yolk!. How to count how many eggs in a week? for example, char kway teow have eggs, Hokkien Noodle have eggs, mee goreng have eggs, Ban Mien soup have egg,..cakes have eggs etc...how to count??
