I seem to notice that while all other prisons in the world (especially those democratic ones and not run by juntas), they seem to treat prison inmates quite inhumanly, and they seem to give the excuse of "spartan conditions", do they authorities in SG realize they are living in the modern world in 2025 and not 1925?

Now i am not talking about inmates who commit horrific crimes like murder/rape, i am simply talking about those small timers like steal kitkat from supermarket, cannot pay fines for selling fruits outside MRT, what is the reason to even treat these small timers these way?

You are suppose to rehabilitate the criminals so when they come out they do not create more problems but instead the authorities seem to create hate more hate than forgiveness of these issues

Plus its also important for taxpayers to know if the budget for the prisons is not being used for better facilities for the inmates then what are they being used for? Bonuses for the jlb?

Now as you see above no beds and nothing sleep on the floor and then when inmates have medical issues due to prolong sleeping on the floor then they bring them to hospital and treat them and use taxpayers monies to pay the medical fees, but this can all be avoided if just simple beds/sponge

So my question is why are SG prisons condition so horrible and without care for for the inmates that their conditions are worse than that of communist china and russian siberian prisons and even worse than devil's island prison where people there even have beds

And on another issue, why are non dangerous and small crimes inmates locked up in their cells for 23 hours daily? These again are small crimes i am referring too like fight in coffee shop, shoplift, cannot pay fines for selling fruits outside mrt?

This is not the way to treat inmates this way as they are humans too, yes they have committed some crimes but the crimes are not so major that they have to be treated in such a way

I know they authorities have said that they do not want mattresses because inmates can hide contraband, but that is a invalid excuse as the prison authorities should investigate how the contraband came in the first place as the prison authorities control access in and out of the prisons not the inmates

Really hope that the SG prisons authority can atleast provide beds/mattress and fans in the cells instead of everything blaming on security issues when other nations with far more dangerous criminals do not have that issue as it seems more like an excuse than anything else

Plus i also do not agree with the rotan issue as its a very barbaric way to deal with anyone who commits crimes, there are ways to deal with such thing instead of whipping people this is not the 18th century, i hope the new PM will rehaul the prison service to be a place to rehabilitate and not to over do the punishments to the point they exceed those of communist china and autocratic russia
