Printing error scuttles $100 billion in U.S. $100 bills

News Services December 10, 2010

A printing error has left blank spots on $100 bank notes in a batch of $110 billion, causing a logistical nightmare for officials who must now weed out the unusable notes.

The problem occurred during the first print run of a newly designed note, which features extra security devices including a holographic ribbon and a metallic inkwell beside the image of Benjamin Franklin.

A "sporadic creasing of the paper during printing" left blank spots on some notes, which were due to be in circulation by Feb 10, according to the Bureau of Engraving and Printing. A spokesman said it was not yet known how many notes were affected.

More than one billion of the bills, approximately 10 per cent of the total stock of U.S. currency on the planet, will have to be screened once a new machine has been invented and built that will identify and separate the defective bills from the properly-printed ones.

If the job was done by hand, it would take between 20 and 30 years, officials estimate, adding that a mechanized process would be completed by 2012.

5. All About the Benjamins

There's been a lot of talk -- largely related to the most recent round of Quantitative Easing -- about the government's penchant for "printing money." Those accusations, founded or not, should no longer be of concern to anyone. As it turns, out the government can't even print money correctly.

On Tuesday, word got out that the new artificial-intelligence infused, retina-scanning $100 bills that were scheduled to enter the market in February had turned into a $110 billion headache. In short, the new bills -- featuring state-of-the-art security protections like a 3D security strip and a color-changing image of a bell -- failed to print properly. Johannes Gutenberg must be turning in his grave.

Now, we're sure you're thinking that a printing error of this magnitude must have been caught early on in the process. After all, we are talking about our nation's currency here and not, say, the latest issue of the Cat Fancy.

Well ... maybe not.

According to CNBC, 1.1 billion of the new bills have been printed. And many of those -- and nobody is exactly sure just how many -- are unusable because a crease in the paper resulted in blank areas turning up on the bill.

Thus, some $110 billion in Benjamins -- or what CNBC described as "more than 10% of the entire supply of U.S. currency on the planet" -- is now resting comfortably in vaults in Fort Worth, Texas and Washington, D.C. Sorting through the bills by hand to find the keepers could take up to 30 years. But no need to worry, a computer system could cut that time down to just one year -- although someone might want to keep an eye on that computer this time.

Ultimately, sorting out the good bills and destroying the bad will, of course, cost more money. And since these were the Terminators of $100 bills, they were already the costliest to produce at 12 cents apiece, bringing the taxpayer tab out of the gate on the whole debacle up to somewhere around $120 million.

TheStreet Says: Well, that's one way to combat inflation.
