JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - A Jacksonville man accidentally shot himself in the penis early Friday morning when he sat on a gun in the driver's seat of his car, police said.
Cedrick Jelks, 38, was taken to Memorial Hospital by 25-year-old Shanekia Roberts, who told police that Jelks was sitting in his Nissan Altima by himself and came into their home on Freedom Crossing Trail in a panic and ran straight to the bathroom.
She said she followed him and saw that he had a gunshot wound to his penis, so she took him to the hospital, where he underwent surgery.
She said Jelks told her he sat on the gun, which accidentally went off.
Investigators found that Jelks was convicted of cocaine possession in 2004.
It's possible he will be facing charges for possessing a firearm, because he is a convicted felon.

JACKSONVILLE, FL — A Jacksonville man is the second Floridian to make headlines in recent weeks for suffering an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound that could wind up with jail time after a hospital stay. The most recent incident occurred Friday morning, sending that Jacksonville man to the hospital with an injury to his penis.
Ironically, the first incident involved a man named Trigger, a Dollar General store and a shot to the ankle. That incident happened in Pasco County's Hudson on June 11.

The Jacksonville incident reportedly occurred in the early morning hours June 30 when Cedrick Jelks, 38, accidentally sat on a gun that was in the driver’s seat of his car, News4Jax reported. The gun fired, striking him in the penis.
Jacksonville police were called to the hospital to investigate the shooting and learned what occurred, the station reported. Jelks reportedly underwent surgery. While his condition is not currently known, authorities say he may face charges related to having that gun in the first place. It seems he was convicted in the past on a drug-related charge, the station reported.
Jacksonville Jail records indicate Jelks has been housed in the agency's facility times in the past, most recently in 2009.
A request for further information from the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office wasn’t immediately responded to.
As for that man named Trigger, his accidental shooting occurred when a .25 caliber handgun he was carrying fell out of his waistband and landed on the floor of a Hudson Dollar General store, according to the Pasco County Sheriff’s Office.
Jason Trigger, 35, of Port Richey left the business right after the shooting, but later turned up at Bayonet Point Hospital for treatment. While hospital staff helped take of his injuries, deputies charged Trigger for being a felon in possession of a firearm.
“Trigger has multiple prior felony convictions,” the agency noted in an email. Jail records also showed Trigger was no stranger to the correctional accommodations Pasco County offers. He’d been booked in six times in the past, dating back to 2009.

A Florida man accidentally shot himself in the penis when he sat on his unsafetied, potentially illegal firearm which he left on the driver’s seat of his car. He may face jail time or a hefty fine on top of his gruesome self-inflicted injury.
Cedrick Jelks, 38, from Jacksonville, Florida reportedly has a previous conviction for possession of cocaine which precludes him from owning a firearm, as well as multiple arrests on his record for a variety of offenses, including driving under the influence.
Jelks was taken to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital for emergency surgery on June 30 by a complete stranger, Shaneika Roberts, 25, whose house he had burst into in the panicked aftermath of the shooting accident.
Police followed up with Jelks at 3am, as it’s standard procedure to question all gunshot wound victims who are admitted to hospital.

Jelks’ story may soon go from bad to worse as felony possession of a firearm is punishable by up to 15 years in prison or a $10,000 fine.
Mandatory minimum sentencing in Florida would mean that, if convicted, Jelks would be forced to serve three years in prison.
A lengthy prison sentence and a potential fine would add insult to an already massive injury, especially given his surname’s close resemblance to a particularly unusual form of penile exercise.
