A BUSINESSMAN was sentenced to six months' jail and banned from driving for eight years on Tuesday for causing the death of a pillion rider and drink driving. Tan Siam Poo is appealing against sentence. He is out on bail of $15,000, pending his appeal. The 60-year-old had admitted to causing the death of customer service officer Norazirah Ajis, 25, when he lost control of his Mercedes-Benz car and caused it to swerve from the extreme right to the leftmost lane, hitting a motorcycle. The offence occurred along Pan-Island Expressway at about 3pm on Oct 27 last year. He also pleaded guilty to drink driving when his alcohol/blood level was slightly more than 11/2 times above the legal limit of 80mg/100ml of blood. The court heard that two motorists along the PIE had seen Tan, managing director of a ship engine spare part retailing company, driving in a zig-zag manner on the extreme right near Corporation Road exit. Shortly, the car swerved to the extreme left and hit Mr Mohammad Ali Daud's motorbike. After the collision, Tan's car continued to move forward, running over and trapping Mr Ali's wife, Ms Norazirah, who was flung off the motorcycle. She died on the spot while her 39-year-old husband had multiple abrasions. Tan could have been jailed for up to two years and/or fined for causing death by doing a negligent act. The maximum penalty for drink driving is a fine of up to $5,000 or a jail term of up to six months
