Drug mule facing life sentence in Bangkok prison

A mere three months after her marriage to a Thai national, a Malaysian woman is facing a life sentence in a Bangkok prison after he tricked her into becoming a drug mule.
Harian Metro frontpaged the story of Norzawati Ramli, 36, from Kampung Bukit Merah in Kelantan, who is being held in the Ngam Wong Wan women’s prison in Bangkok, pending trial for allegedly possessing 26kg of syabu.
A source told the daily she had been on honeymoon in Haadyai when she was arrested during a hotel raid on May 14.
Norzawati, who has a 10-year-old child from a previous marriage, had married the Thai national soon after divorcing her first husband.
They had met in her village where the man was working on contract, and had married without her parents’ blessings in southern Thailand.
According to her sister Nordiana, 29, the victim had left her child with their mother, as she went with her new husband who had obtained a contract to transport vehicles from Bangkok to Haadyai.
However, 10 days later, the family received a call from a man informing them of Norzawa-ti’s arrest.
Their father Ramli Daud, 60, went to visit Norzawati in prison, where she denied any knowledge of the drugs.
A lawyer said Norzawati’s husband and four others were arrested first, and her husband claimed that the drugs belonged to her.
> The daily also reported about a woman who fell asleep while cooking, causing her kitchen to catch fire.
In the incident at Kuantan around 2.30pm three days ago, the 25-year-old Myanmar woman had only noticed something amiss when she smelled something burning, and heard her neighbours screaming at her to get out.
Firemen managed to douse the fire which had affected only the kitchen area.
