But I don’t think it was Tony Tan they were booing, per se.
They were booing the PAP, and Tony Tan happens to be the personification of the party.
They were booing the system that allows only a very select group of candidates to contest the Election, and Tony Tan happens to be the most “select” candidate.
They were booing the Constitutional amendments, which only empower the President in five small areas and requires him to keep quiet in every other area, and Dr Tan happens to be the staunchest supporter of the “quiet” President system.
They were booing Mindef’s “explanation” of Patrick Tan’s long NS deferment and unusual NS vocation, and Tony Tan happens to be at the centre of it.
They were booing PM Lee’s endorsement of Tony Tan, and Tony Tan happens to be the subject of that endorsement.
They were booing PM Lee’s assertion that not everyone who got a COE is well-qualified to be a President, and Tony Tan happens to be the candidate PM Lee says is qualified.
And most of all, they were booing the idea that the PAP Govt wants to push a particular candidate for the Presidential Election when the post is supposed to be apolitical.
To Dr Tony Tan– please don’t take the booing personally. It’s not you who’s being booed. It’s who’s behind you, who supports you, who you were, what you did, what others did and how the system works that’s being booed.
