</TR><!-- headline one : end --><!-- show image if available --></TBODY></TABLE>
<!-- START OF : div id="storytext"--><!-- more than 4 paragraphs -->I REFER to last Friday's letter by Mr Raymond Lo, 'JB nursing homes: Health Minister meant it well'.
The reaction to Mr Khaw Boon Wan's comments on nursing homes in Johor Baru is a sad but true reflection on Singaporeans. We are a country of small-minded and ungracious people.
Otherwise, why would the Government need to legislate against people who do not flush toilets, smoke in confined spaces, fail to give way to buses leaving the bus bay and so on? Although I do not think that passing laws is the way to make Singaporeans more gracious and considerate, it seems the most expedient.
The Internet is filled with negative and ill-intended comments on Singapore. Many of those who have made such comments are cowards - they hide behind the anonymity of cyberspace to make irresponsible remarks.
The Government should be less sensitive to the views of negative people. It should keep its chin up and forge on. People in public office must accept that there will always be unkind, small-minded and uncharitable people in any society. It is unfortunate that Singapore seems to have more of this kind of people than other societies.
Perhaps our overcaring Government should stop shielding people from the harsh realities of life. It should make them take a more active role in life. Overcaring makes people expect more and more from the Government. How much is enough? Tan Wee Teck
