Doctor wants conviction for professional misconduct quashed

<!-- story content : start --> A NEUROLOGIST found guilty of treating patients in ways not accepted by his peers argued on Wednesday that his treatment had benefitted 700 patients. Dr Gobinathan Devathasan, 60, wants the Court of Appeal to set aside his conviction for professional misconduct by the Singapore Medical Council (SMC). He had been reprimanded and fined $5,000 by SMC for recommending ultrasound to a 77-year-old patient suffering from Parkinson's Disease in 2006. After hearing from his lawyer Myint Soe and SMC's lawyer Alvin Yeo on Wednesday, the appellate court reserved judgement. Dr Devathasan, who has an unblemished 30-year record, maintained that the treatment combining transcranial magnetic stimulation and therapeutic ultrasound had benefitted the patient.
