'69 to be exact. when hdb flats went upwards, hawker food was being delivered by baskets up to the 6.9th floor. anything above that required a longer rope, which was hard to find and buy. moreover, no hawker on the ground floor wanted to risk contents in the basket dropping on them, except cash. also, those who lived in shophouses had a hand in this tradition too as hawkers plied the streets below on a constant basis, tooting horns and shouting their specialties. and not a word of "knnbccb" was uttered as cash was lowered and food elevated. it was business and win-win for all. it's now happening in italy, or it has been an italian tradition all along since the days of the black death.
