It was controlled chaos at a block of flats on Sunday as exterminators moved in to rid residents of the pests that have been giving them sleepless nights - bedbugs.
Plastic bags lined the corridors as 100 volunteers cleaned out the rental properties to prepare them for fumigation.
Block 51 in Chin Swee Road is the first to be entirely fumigated in a new project which involves public organisations and companies teaming up to stamp out bedbugs in rental flats.
It is overseen by Dr Lily Neo, an MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC. She said about 40 per cent of the rental flats in her Kreta Ayer-Kim Seng ward are infested with the insects. She added that she plans to expand the project to all 5,000 households living in rental flats in her ward.
