Poop allegedly 'falls from planes' in residential areas of Delhi

Allegations of human waste falling from aircrafts over residential parts of southern Delhi are being investigated by India’s environmental court.
The National Green Tribunal of India is to look into the allegations after a complaint was lodged by former senior army official Satwant Singh Dahiya, who is seeking criminal proceedings against commercial airlines for posing a health risk to householders in the areas hit, Deccan Chronicle reports.

The request also demands that any potential waste be examined as evidence prior to the tribunal.

The official also requested a 24-hour helpline residents can access to immediately to report such incidents and a monitoring system to prevent aircrafts from drops of “human soil or excreta” when landing.

“For the past one week in the early morning, we found that walls and floors of terraces of our house splattered with large patches of excreta dumped by aircraft flying in front of Palam airport at night,” Dahiya said.

”This is the second time this has happened. Last time it had occurred in early October when we had spent Rs 50,000 [$748] to get the entire exterior resurfaced with fresh paint,” he added.

In the plea, the complaint highlights the Hindu festival of Diwali approaching and how householders “cannot afford to have this defacement everyday.”

Indiasaid on Thursday it had launched surgical strikes on "terrorists" inside Pakistan-controlled Kashmir for the first time, marking a major escalation between the two nuclear-armed rivals.

Officials said Indian ground troops had crossed a few hundreds metres inside Pakistan-controlled Kashmir to destroy six to eight terrorist “launch pads” - structures close to the border used by militants preparing to infiltrate into India.

The strikes before dawn on Thursday were in direct response to a spate of recent cross-border attacks on Indian-controlled Kashmir, which New Delhi has blamed on Pakistan amid rapidly worsening relations between the countries.

The most recent such incident, on India’s Uri army base on September 18, left 18 soldiers dead, and was the deadliest attack on Indian security forces in over a decade.

Thursday’s military strikes were in direct response to intelligence warnings of further, immediate cross-border threats, officials said. Casualties on the Pakistani side were in the “double digits”, and fatalities of Pakistani army troops could not be ruled out despite the raid targeting terrorists.

No Indian casualties were reported.

India frequently accuses Pakistan’s army and intelligence services of supporting anti-Indian militant groups who wish to stir up unrest in the contested Himalayan state of Kashmir.

Pakistan on Thursday sought to play down the incident, denying that any such cross-border strikes had taken place.

The Pakistan army’s media wing said two of its soldiers had been killed in overnight cross-border fire, but described the incident as a regular or “existential” phenomenon that New Delhi was seeking to portray in more dramatic terms to satisfy its own public.

“Indian army opened up small arm fire last night on five sectors across the line of control,” said Pakistan's defence minister Khawaja Asif, referring to the de facto border between the Indian and Pakistani controlled parts of Kashmir.

“If India tries to do this again we will respond forcefully. India is doing this only to please their media and public.”

In a statement from his office, Nawaz Sharif, Pakistan's prime minister, "strongly condemned the unprovoked and naked aggression of Indian forces”.

Villages close to the Pakistan border in Indian Punjab were told to prepare to evacuate on Thursday, while the public was banned from the Wagah border closing ceremony.

Narendra Modi, India’s prime minister, has been under intense pressure from his own party and the Indian public to respond to the Uri army base attack.

Mr Modi came to power pledging to toughen India’s response to cross-border incursions from Pakistan. He vowed earlier this month that the Uri raid “will not go unpunished”.

However, until Thursday Mr Modi had chosen a diplomatic response, by seeking to isolate Pakistan at the UN, withdrawing his country from the Islamabad-hosted regional SAARC summit, and publicly reviewing an important water-sharing treaty between the two countries.

The announcement of military strikes on Pakistani-controlled Kashmir soil marks a dramatic departure from that strategy.

Kashmir is claimed in its entirety by both India and Pakistan, but controlled in part by each. Pakistan denies any role in the Uri army base attack.

Astronauts To Fix Broken Toilet, Perform Spacewalk

A day of spacewalking and plumbing repair are in store for the Endeavour and Expedition 20 crews aboard the International Space Station.

The 13 spacefarers were awakened at 5:33 a.m. CDT to the theme from the 1960s television series “Thunderbirds,” by composer Barry Gray, for Canadian Space Agency astronaut Julie Payette.

Preparations for the second of five spacewalks will resume at 6:13 a.m. in the Quest airlock module. Spacewalkers Dave Wolf and Tom Marshburn are scheduled to start their six and a half hour excursion at 10:28 a.m.

While the spacewalk team is getting ready, Expedition 20 commander Gennady Padalka and Flight Engineer Frank De Winne will begin replacing components of the Waste Hygiene Compartment toilet in the Destiny Laboratory. The system’s dose pump failed after running for about 15 minutes Sunday. The pump introduces the correct amount of chemicals into the system to help separate liquids from solid waste.

Since then the station crew has been using the toilet in the Zvezda service module and the shuttle crew has been using the shuttle commode, but the temporary shutdown has no significant impact on joint docked operations.

Flight controllers powered up the station’s robotic arm at 5 a.m. today. Mission Specialist Julie Payette will use Canadarm2 like a space-aged “cherry picker,” moving Wolf between an Integrated Cargo Carrier and one of the station’s External Stowage Platforms so he can stage for key station replacement parts. The pair also will install a television camera on the newly delivered Japanese Exposed Facility.

Today’s spacewalk will take place on the anniversary of the first moon walk by Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin on July 20, 1969.

Tim Kopra, the newest member of the Expedition 20 crew, will spend several hours adapting to his new home on orbit with help from off-going Flight Engineer Koichi Wakata, who will be returning to Earth with Endeavour’s crew after four months on the station as a member of the Expedition 18, 19 and 20 crews.

The next shuttle status report will be issued following the spacewalk, or earlier if events warrant.

Smog has covered New Delhi, India, leading to warnings that even healthy locals may suffer from respiratory issues. Pollution levels have hit some 35 times the recommended safe limit set by the World Health Organization (WHO).
New Delhi usually ranks as one of the world’s most polluted cities as it is, but on Monday morning things spiraled out of control. The situation was worsened by smoke from firecrackers used to celebrate the Hindu festival of lights, Diwali, plus the burning of crops in the region.

"Last night, levels hit the severe category, which is the worst. You could see and sense how the visibility had come down and there was a choking haze all around," said Anumita Roychowdhury from the Centre for Science and Environment, as cited by Reuters.

The levels of PM 2.5, a tiny particle that can get into the lungs, have reached up to 883 micrograms per cubic meter, the Delhi Pollution Control Committee said, as quoted by The Hindu. This is 14-16 times higher than the standard of 60 micrograms.

According to the WHO's mean guideline of 25 micrograms per cubic meter, the maximum level of New Delhi pollution on Monday is up to 35 times the international norm.

Other sources have given even scarier figures – the US embassy in New Delhi said PM 2.5 levels had jumped to 1,126 by 2am Monday (20:30 GMT).

The Indian capital is one of the most polluted cities on the planet, with India also being named as home to four of the world’s 10 cities with the highest level of air pollution, the WHO reported in May, as quoted by Reuters.

"Where is the plan for short- and medium-term action, and for emergency action? We need one very urgently," Roychowdhury said.


A recent report by UNICEF shows disturbing figures: 300 million children worldwide breathe extremely toxic air, and 600,000 die annually because of it.
