Dentist fined for professional misconduct

SINGAPORE: A dentist has been fined S$10,000 and censured for allowing his oral health therapist to perform dental procedures in his absence.
The Singapore Dental Council's disciplinary committee also ordered Dr Jimmy Yap Eng Huat to furnish a letter of undertaking not to repeat the same offence.
Dr Yap was also ordered to pay the costs of the disciplinary proceedings, including those of the council's solicitors and legal assessor.
The oral health therapist, Lim Jingyi, was suspended for 24 months, censured and also ordered to furnish a letter of undertaking to the council.
Ms Lim's suspension took effect on 25 December 2013.
Both Dr Yap and Ms Lim faced one charge each of professional misconduct under the Dental Registration Act, for the dental procedure performed on 28 July 2011, without the supervision of Dr Yap, as required by the Act.
The Disciplinary Committee noted that Dr Yap did not put in place any protocol to prevent Ms Lim from performing dental procedures in his absence.
They were practising at Nam Fung Dental Surgery at Geylang Road.
Ms Lim pleaded guilty to the charge against her on 30 October 2013, whilst Dr Yap contested the charge. - CNA/xq
