A 25-year-old person has become the youngest to die from dengue this year.

Without revealing more details of the case, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Wednesday (Aug 5) that the latest death takes the number of people who have died from dengue this year to 20 as of Sunday.

Their ages ranged between 25 and 92. Of the 20, 18 worked or lived in active dengue clusters, which currently number 391.

Professor Ooi Eng Eong of Duke-NUS Medical School said it is uncommon for young adults to be so seriously affected by the disease, even as he noted that he would need more information about the person's medical background to make more specific conclusions.

"In general, young children from five to nine or 10 years of age are at higher risk but this tails off when they become young adults," the deputy director for the emerging infectious diseases programme at the school said.

"So I would say it is not common, but the risk is also not absent."

Dr Leong Choon Kit, a family physician at Mission Medical Clinic also said that those who are older are usually more likely to die from dengue, but noted that people of all age groups have suffered adverse effects from the infection, including severe liver damage.

"The danger is not related to a particular age group... What we know is that those who get it bad usually have early damage to their liver, low albumin levels and are poorly hydrated," he said.

The best precaution then is for people to protect themselves against bites, get rid of breeding sites, see a doctor early, hydrate, and rest.

Dr Leong added that more serious attention should be given to vaccinating people against the dengue virus.

In 2016, an 11-year-old boy died of dengue in a rare case.

Dengue is obviously way more dangerous compared to Covid-19.

The breeding ground for mosquitoes is mainly at the numerous construction sites all over the island. The way to fight dengue is to stop all construction until a vaccine is available. We cannot risk the lives of Singapore's young men and women. Every single life is precious.

Did the person have any underlying chronic conditions?

I would like to know how many actually died from dengue, who had been otherwise healthy before.

If you stop construction how are couples going to get their BTO flats?

People need a place to fuck, even if others have to die.

By the end of the year Dengue will have killed more people than Covid-19 and hundreds more will have to suffer permanent liver damage. However Singapore has never destroyed the economy because of dengue so why do so because of Covid-19 which is less serious than dengue?

For dengue, they can always hit out at their favorite bogeyman: stagnant water.

For Covid, everyone is a suspected virus carrier and infector. Presumption of guilt is a cherished tradition in Sinkieland due to the kangaroo courts. Because it's also a totalitarian shithole, it also feels good to lord over peasants with masks and SafeEntry and 'ambassadors'.

Oh, it's also quite lucrative selling masks these days. Plenty of vending machines selling masks.

Oh dear. I'd advise those who sleep in the buff to take some precautions. @ginfreely
Beside combating the houseflies, daughter dearest should watch out for the mosquitoes too.

Actually still got dengue.

Wearing mask is a bit like NEA fumigating to kill mozzie, or spraying mozzie deterrent.

How come we dont quarantine those with positive dengue?

We dont quarantine them. meaning mozzie can still bite them then go bite someone else.

Dengue and malaria was almost wiped out in the late 80s. That is when PAP opened the immigration floodgates and now its back and unstoppable.

Those whose family died of the disease, who did you voted for?

brits found that out when they were colonizing other cuntries and importing labor to work in newfound colonies. they needed coolies and slaves to weed out native populations in order to take over more land and resources. they then set up enclaves and segregated ghettos for these two tiresome troublemakers to thrive.
