[h=2]Dengue cases hit 10,000![/h]

With 813 new dengue cases reported last week (9-15 Jun), as at
yesterday (17 Jun) 3pm, the total number of reported dengue cases in Singapore
has exceeded 10,000 at 10,257. So far 2 persons have died from complications
arising from dengue fever.
About a month ago (17 May), the total number of dengue cases was just 7,000
and the week before on 8 June, it was 9,298.
For the whole of 2011 and 2012, the number of cases was 5,330 and 4,632
respectively.
In May 2013, Changi General Hospital saw 652 cases, four times more than the
163 cases in January 2013.
The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is doing its best by asking construction
workers to flush out breeding grounds for mosquitoes at rail and road
worksites.
Chua Chong Kheng, deputy chief executive of LTA, said, “With an average of
about 22,000 workers working at LTA sites on a daily basis, we have a duty and
responsibility to prevent the transmission of dengue fever to our workers as
well as to the communities we work in.”
According to NEA [Link], a dengue cluster is
formed when 2 or more dengue cases occur within 14 days and the homes of the
dengue victims are within a distance of 150m.
There are 3 alert levels which indicate the severity of a dengue cluster.
Each alert level is associated with a list of preventive actions that the public can take to protect
against dengue:
