KAMPALA (Uganda) - PROPOSED legislation would impose the death penalty for some gay Ugandans, and their family and friends could face up to seven years in jail if they fail to report them to authorities. Even landlords could be imprisoned for renting to homosexuals.

Gay rights activists say the bill, which has prompted growing international opposition, promotes hatred and could set back efforts to combat HIV/Aids. They believe the bill is part of a continentwide backlash because Africa's gay community is becoming more vocal.

'It's a question of visibility,' said David Cato, who became an activist after he was beaten up four times, arrested twice, fired from his teaching job and outed in the press because he is gay. 'When we come out and ask for our rights, they pass laws against us.'

The legislation has drawn global attention from activists across the spectrum of views on gay issues. The measure was proposed in Uganda following a visit by leaders of US conservative Christian ministries that promote therapy for gays to become heterosexual.

However, at least one of those leaders has denounced the bill, as have some other conservative and liberal Christians in the United States.

Gay-rights activists say the legislation is likely to pass. But the bill is still being debated and could undergo changes before a vote, which has not yet been set. -- AP

While I laud Uganda's efforts in tackling the problem of homosexuality head on, I feel that the penalties are way too harsh and are winding the clock back to the dark ages when witches were burned at the stake.

Homosexuality is a mental illness and should be treated as such. Sufferers need treatment not the death penalty.

I am all for compulsory institutionalisation in facilities which specialise in curing homosexuals of their affliction so that they can be re-integrated into society upon their release.

Doing nothing is not an option. Celebrating the "rights" of gays will only allow the cancer of homosexuality to spread deeper. Gays need to be dealt with immediately before it is too late.

I celebrate Indian's enlightened stand to remove penalties on Gays. Indian understands fully how a huge stupid population is a danger to the world. The huge production of smoke and gas by India's zero substance population encourages global warming. Indians should turn decisviely Gay, with at least 99.999% of its male population enjoying the companionship of male Indians exclusively to save the world from a smokey end.

We should just dump all the gays on an island and let them rule themselves. Win Win for everyone. They get toi create whatever laws they want that doesn't discriminate them, we can finally be rid of them. The "local" population will be extinct after 1 generation.

I support u fully!!!! Let the GAYS & ARSE POKERS have a self rule in some island. i can suggest Pulau Belakang Mati (pun intended!) They can try & PRO-CREATE more gays. maybe plant their seeds on thier faeces. Who knows? Life may find a way!!!!!
