Thailand’s Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra defended herself on Tuesday against abuse of power allegations in a crucial court case that is one of several legal challenges, which could remove her from office.

Ms. Yingluck is accused of abusing her authority by transferring her National Security Council chief in 2011 to another position. Critics say the transfer was to benefit her ruling party and violated the Constitution.

“I would like to deny all allegations I am accused of,” Ms. Yingluck said calmly, seated beside her legal team. “As the Prime Minister, I am entitled to carry out responsibilities I have toward the people ... and for the utmost benefit of the general public.”

The case was lodged by anti-government senators, who won an initial victory in February when another court ruled that the official, Thawil Pliensri, must be restored to his job.

If Ms. Yingluck is found guilty of interfering in state affairs for her personal benefit or that of her political party, she would have to step down as Prime Minister.

The court has not said when it will rule on the case.

Thailand PM Yingluck Shinawatra may be banned from politics if proven guilty

Bangkok: Thailand PM Yingluck Shinawatra who is facing allegations of power abuse to transfer a top official, could be removed from office and banned from politics for five years if proven guilty.

Ms Shinawatra is due for a crucial ruling by the Constitutional Court on Wednesday in wake of accusations that her Pheu Thai party fetched benefits when she transferred Thawil Pliensri in 2011.

The Court will on Wednesday decide if the transfer was unconstitutional and if proven guilty, the PM risks being removed from office and may face a five year ban from politics.

Denying the allegations against her by anti-government senators, Yingluck today appeared before the Constitutional Court and said, that Mr Thawil's transfer was for the nation's benefit and it didn't violate any laws.

"I deny the allegation... I didn't violate any laws, I didn't receive any benefit from the appointment," Ms Yingluck told the court on Tuesday.

Seated along with her legal team, Ms Yingluck said that as the country's PM she is “entitled to carry out responsibilities I have toward the people ... and for the utmost benefit of the general public."

The ruling from the Court against Ms Yingluck might be another jolt for the Thai government which has been facing protesters since last year, who want a new “people's council” to be elected.

Protesters led by opposition leader Suthep Thaugsuban accuse Yingluck government of being a puppet regime being run indirectly by her brother, Thaksin Shinawatra who was ousted in 2006.

Yingluck's Pheu Thai party is popular with the rural people but urbans and middle class citizens are against her governance.

In order to diffuse the protests, the government had announced polls on Feb 2, but they were finally cancelled due to increasing resistance by the protesters.

Last week, Thailand government has declared polls to be held on July 20 but it has already been rejected by the opposition.

Court removes Thai PM Yingluck Shinawatra from office

Wednesday, 07 May 2014 12:20 Posted by Parvez Jabri 13
BANGKOK: Thailand's Constitutional Court dismissed Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra from office for abuse of power on Wednesday, in a ruling that threatens to unleash a new wave of political unrest in the kingdom.
The court, which has played a key role in deposing Shinawatra-linked governments in recent turbulent chapters of Thai politics, ruled unanimously that she acted illegally by transferring a top security official in 2011.
"Therefore her prime minister status has ended... Yingluck can no longer stay in her position acting as caretaker prime minister," presiding judge Charoon Intachan said in a televised ruling.
Several cabinet ministers who endorsed the decision to transfer Thawil will also be stripped of their status.
The court also declined to appoint a new prime minister.
It was not immediately clear whether the ruling would create a political vacuum or if one of Yingluck's ministers nominated after Thawil's transfer would be able to step into her shoes, pending a future election.
The case plunges Thailand deeper into a prolonged political crisis with anti-government protesters still on Bangkok's streets and Yingluck's "Red Shirt" supporters also threatening to rally to defend her, raising fears of clashes.
Jubilant anti-government demonstrators blew whistles outside the court to mark her removal -- a key demand of their movement, which is seeking to curb the influence of Yingluck's billionaire brother, Thaksin.
"I am happy even though the the whole cabinet has not been removed. People who do not respect the law should be thrown out," Linjong Thummathorn told AFP.
The kingdom has been bedevilled by a bitter political schism since 2006 when an army coup deposed former telecoms magnate Thaksin.
He is reviled by the Bangkok elite, middle class and royalist southerners who say he has sponsored nepotism, widespread corruption and perceive him as a threat to the monarchy.
But he is loved by the populous, poor north and northeast and among the urban working class for recognising their burgeoning political and economic aspirations.
They have returned Shinawatra-led or linked governments to power in every election since 2001.
Thaksin lives overseas to avoid jail for corruption convictions, but is accused of running the country by proxy through his sister.
