SINGAPORE — A 39-year-old man was charged on Saturday (April 18) with using criminal force on a safe distancing ambassador (SDA) with the intention to deter her from carrying out her duty.
Jayseelan Ramachandran allegedly slapped the back of Ms Lee Jia Jia, a public servant, at about 1.30 pm on Sunday (April 12) at Block 684 Hougang Avenue 8.
“Preliminary investigations revealed the man had hit the SDA’s hand, causing her phone to drop, when he was advised not to loiter along Hougang Avenue 8. The man fled from the scene after the assault,” the Singapore Police Force said in a statement on Saturday morning.
The police had said on Friday that they have seen a rise of abuse cases against the 3,000 officers and ambassadors deployed across Singapore daily to enforce circuit breaker and safe-distancing rules.
As of Thursday, the police had received 12 reports of physical or verbal abuse against these personnel.
In their statement on Saturday, the police said Jayseelan, a Singaporean, is also being investigated for two other cases of voluntarily causing hurt and breaches of Covid-19 safe distancing measures.
Officers from Ang Mo Kio Police Division had relied on images from police cameras to establish his identity and arrested him on Friday.
If found guilty of using criminal force to deter a public servant from discharging her duty, he could be jailed for up to four years, or fined, or both.
The police said on Saturday that they have zero tolerance towards acts of violence against enforcement officers and safe distancing ambassadors and urged the public to comply with their instructions and take the circuit breaker measures seriously.
