6th November 2019 – (Hong Kong) As the pro-democracy movement entered its sixth month, many public amenities including MTR stations, traffics lights and traffic barriers were vandalised and damaged. During the Legislative Council meeting today, spokesperson for Security Bureau expressed that as of 29th October, a total of 85 out of 93 MTR stations and 60 out of 68 Light Rail Stations were vandalised and damaged. Gates were damaged 1,600 times while ticketing machines, Octopus card reload machines and customer service departments were damaged over 960 times. Octopus readers at Light Rail station platforms were damaged over 915 times.
CCTVs at stations were damaged 1,100 times, escalator and elevator were vandalised over 75 times and 50 times respectively. Rioters also shattered the glass panels at MTR exits over 1,060 times and the roller shutters were ruined over 130 times.
Meanwhile, the 450 traffic light systems in the city were damaged 850 times, 40 street lamps were destroyed. Rioters removed over 4.56 megametres of road barriers and at least 2,900 square meters of pedestrian pavement bricks were removed. A total of 670 public recycling bins owned by Food and Environmental Hygiene Department were also destroyed. 900 temporary plastic road barriers and 1,500 water-filled barricades were either lost or destroyed. Highways Department estimated total repair costs to be in the region of HK$10 million while Food and Environmental Hygiene Department estimated the replacement cost for bins to be around HK$560,000.
Also, at least 300 bus routes, 300 minibus rotes and tram rotes were diverted or suspended as of October. Public facilities owned by Leisure and Cultural Services Department were closed over 1,900 times due to street protests.
