The U.S. and Israel militaries are preparing to stage a major joint missile and air defense drill in Israel next week.

The drill, Exercise Austere Challenge 2012, will be the largest air defense exercise ever to be conducted between
the two armies. More than 3,500 U.S. service members in Israel and off shore will participate in the drill.

U.S. Air Force Lt. Gen. Craig Franklin said more than 1,000 U.S. military personnel are arriving in Israel for the
exercise. U.S. service members will man Patriot anti-missile systems, an Aegis ballistic missile defense ship and
various other air defense systems.

The Israelis will field more than 1,000 service members and will test the Iron Dome and Arrow 2 defense systems.
The Israelis will also tie the developing David’s Sling system into the scenarios.
