Cops get set to make gangsters broke

SEPANG: Police will begin forfeiting assets of secret society kingpins once the amendments to the Prevention of Crime Act are gazetted, said Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar (pic).
The move, he said, would be another phase to the Ops Cantas Khas which was launched in August.
“We will launch an all out assault and cripple these secret societies, not only by capturing gang members but also their bosses as well as seizing their assets,” he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport yesterday.
The Prevention of Crime (Amend*ment and Extension) Bill was tabled at the Dewan Rakyat on Sept 25 by Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
The proposed amendments followed the repeal of the Emergency Ordinance and the Internal Security Act, which allowed for detention without charge or trial.
Zahid denied that the amendments were akin to the ISA, explaining that they were a form of transformation.
Once the kingpins are arrested under the PCA, Section 413(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code would be used to seize ill-gotten property.
The section stipulates that a magistrate would issue an order to either seize such property or return it to its rightful owner.
Meanwhile, Federal Anti-Vice, Gambling and Secret Societies Division (D7) principal assistant director Senior Asst Comm Datuk Abdul Jalil Hassan said since the operations were launched on Aug 17, police had screened 499,127 suspects and nabbed 18,669 people for various crimes.
“We have also seized 35 firearms, 19 homemade air rifles and 1,954 bullets.
“In our checks of 304,186 vehicles, we have seized 831 stolen vehicles, including 416 motorcycles and 351 cars,” he said.
SAC Abdul Jalil added that on Sunday alone, a total of 1,995 police personnel were involved in nationwide operations, leading to the arrest of 332 suspects and seizure of 21 stolen vehicles.
