SINGAPORE: A contractor in charge of building the Bugis Downtown Line station has been fined $70,000 for failing to ensure the workplace was safe and did not pose risks to people in the premises.

In July 2012, two Chinese workers died and eight others were injured after formwork structures collapsed during construction of a pedestrian linkway near the station.

In court on Wednesday, a representative of Soletanche Bachy-Koh Brothers joint venture pleaded guilty to failing to take safety measures at the site.

The firm had failed to ensure that a supervisor regularly inspect the formwork structures.

It also failed to ensure that the structures were inspected and certified by a professional engineer.

The sub-contractor, Sin Herh Construction, engaged to carry out structural works at the site, also pleaded guilty to one charge under the Workplace Safety and Health Act.

Under the Workplace Safety and Health Act, the maximum penalty is a $500,000 fine. - CNA/de
