A doughnut with a curried boiled egg inside or ready-made hotdogs with the ketchup already baked on top may not feature in the average Western bakery - but that has not stopped them from being part of a Japanese shopping experiment.

Spencer Kelly reports on the bakery that, even without a human attendant or a bar code, can recognise and then charge for exactly what is being eaten.

He also looks at virtual food and a restaurant that relies on robots.
