First, it is unclear whether SMRT has an adequate business continuity plan to deal with major outages.

Commuters stuck in the train near Dhoby Ghaut waited for over an hour for help to arrive, and they may wonder what would happen if there is a far more serious problem. And even with SMRT adding buses to bridge the gap, commuters above-ground were stuck with long queues and nearly-gridlocked buses in some areas.

Second, SMRT still does not seem to have a strong communications plan. As Land Transport Authority (LTA) deputy chief executive Lim Bok Ngam said: "SMRT must do much more in their communications to the public to provide timely on-site information to help commuters."

In a place renowned for its reliable infrastructure and long-term planning, the city's image may take a hit in the eyes of residents and visitors alike, if a fundamental service in the centre of town cannot deliver commuters from their office to home.
