A woman suspected that she was recently cheated by a taxi with a tampered meter, Chinese evening daily
Lianhe Wanbao reported.
The Filipino manager in her 30s, had called for a taxi at 5.45am on Tuesday, Nov 22, to go from her home to Changi Airport.
She returned on the same afternoon after a meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
Taking the same route back home, she noticed that her taxi trip cost twice as much, coming up to $45.10
for a 41.1km trip.
This was double what she paid for on the way to the airport.
Puzzled and suspecting that she had been cheated, she consulted her friend, Mr Ho (in his 40s), a taxi
driver, on the discrepancy.
According to Mr Ho, a trip from Geylang to Changi usually costs about $15 to $16.
A check on Google Maps shows that the two locations are about 15km away.
In response to the matter, Comfort Cabs has apologised to the woman and promises to return the extra fare.
The taxi company states that fare meters cannot be tampered with, but they may malfunction.
Apparently, after the woman alighted from the taxi, the driver also felt that the fare meter may have
malfunctioned and had driven the taxi back to the workshop for checks.
