TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Taiwan's Coast Guard intercepted a Chinese fishing boat that abducted five of their officers during an inspection yesterday, officials said.
Five Coast Guard vessels managed to intercept the fishing boat in waters 40 nautical miles northeast of Taiwan's Pengjiayu island as of 7 p.m. following a few hours chase, officials said.
Coast Guard officials added that the situation was under control and the fishing boat will be escorted to Taiwan.
According to the officials, the five officers from the Coast Guard's Keelung division boarded the Chinese boat that had entered the waters around Pengjiayu illegally at about 2 p.m.
Their investigation had barely started when the fishing boat suddenly sped away with the five officers still on board.
The Coast Guard boat originally carrying the officers then started chasing the vessel, with four other Coast Guard vessels joining in later.
No further developments were reported as of press time.
