An elderly man sustained injuries to his head and is now unconscious, after he was hit by a train along the MRT tracks near Expo station on Saturday afternoon.

A police spokesman said a call was received at 1.43pm, requesting for assistance at the station. "Upon police's arrival, it was established that a train had hit a man along the MRT tracks heading towards Expo MRT station," added the police.

The victim, believed to be in his 70s, suffered "multiple cuts on his body" and was conveyed conscious to hospital, said the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF).

A spokesman for rail operator SMRT, who was responding to queries from The Straits Times, said the victim was reportedly "seen lying close to the tracks between Tanah Merah and Expo stations" just a minute earlier at 1.42pm.

"The train heading in that direction was stopped, in accordance with operating procedures and the man duly moved to safety," said the SMRT spokesman. "SMRT is working with the Police and SCDF to investigate the matter."

It remains unclear what the victim was doing along the tracks when the collision occurred. Investigations are ongoing.
