<!--close .storyLeft-->THE world today is in its present state because of the collective thinking of its leaders and people. Singapore is no different.
This is why, every National Day, filled with pride and gratitude, I count the nation's blessings.
We are now on the cusp of a new era in our political landscape. A new president will address our 12th Parliament, which includes nine opposition members, no less.
The Government is now listening, engaging even more a better-educated, much less apolitical electorate.
So it is crucial that Singaporeans and residents, imbibed with infinite beliefs and thinking and an indomitable spirit to set and overcome challenges, make compelling suggestions and contributions to further enhance our quality of life, as we relentlessly reinvent ourselves.
Who would have thought that the standards of our present Institute of Technical Education were those of the polytechnics of yesteryear, and the standards of our present polytechnics were those of the universities of the past? Given time, our current universities will surely achieve international Ivy League status.
Who would have thought 20 years ago that we would be a world leader in water management, and would, in due course, be totally self-reliant for our water requirements?
As we celebrate National Day, marching majestically into our 47th year of independence, we must dare to dream lofty dreams, to create and transform our society into the seemingly impossible, plugging into the wonderful world of power, promise and possibilities.
As former foreign minister George Yeo so aptly put it: "It is in the nature of man to explore the limits, to push the boundaries of his envelope. Planet Earth will become the old world. The new world will be out there - the Moon, Mars, Starship Enterprise..."
Let Singapore be "Starship Enterprise" and all of us its crew, helping to navigate the future through our collective consciousness and actions as we reach for the stars.
Happy birthday, Singapore!
Clinton Lim
