SINGAPORE : A clinic assistant was sentenced to three weeks' jail on Tuesday for stealing 13 canisters of codeine-laced cough syrup from her clinic and selling them.
36-year-old Morasimah Sejan was found guilty of five counts of theft and five counts of contravening the Medicines Act.
Sixteen other similar counts were also taken into consideration.
Morasimah stole several canisters of the cough syrup from YSL Bedok Clinic and Surgery at Bedok North Street between March and July 2010.
She swiped them from the clinic's reception area and hid them in her handbag during her night-shift.
She then sold each 3.8-litre canister at S$47.50 to unknown buyers.
Her mischief came to light when her employer, 44-year-old Dr Lau Boon Kwang, discovered missing cough syrup canisters.
He also caught Morasimah red-handed on several occasions.
For contravening the Medicines Act, she could have been jailed up to two years and fined up to S$5,000.
For theft, the maximum punishment is seven years' jail and a fine.
