Matthew Hedges: Who is the man at the centre of the spy row?

Friends, family and colleagues of the British academic jailed in the United Arab Emirates after being accused of spying are united in one thing: They say he is not an intelligence agent. But who is he?
Matthew Hedges is no stranger to the Middle East. He had spent time there when he was younger and had worked in the region for several years.
But on a research trip for his PhD in May he was arrested.
On 21 November he was jailed for life for "spying for or on behalf of" the UK government, but he was granted a presidential pardon and freed five days later.
Here is what we know about the man who his family and friends insist is just an "innocent victim".
Who is Matthew Hedges?
The 31-year-old is a PhD student at Durham University but his status belies an established career in research and consultancy.
He describes himself as "an intelligence analyst at a cyber-intelligence firm in the UK" and has been an advisor for consultancy firm Gulf State Analytics since January 2016.
Corporate investigations, due diligence and research also appear in his areas of freelance consultancy expertise.
His research covers subjects such as defence, security, international affairs and military policy in the Middle East.

Since starting work on his PhD at Durham University he has been employed as an associate researcher at the university's Institute for Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies (IMEIS).
He is married to publicist Daniela Tejada who he reportedly met while studying at the University of Exeter.
What is his background?
Hedges was born in Surrey and went to the independent Cranleigh boarding school near Guildford.
He spent his school and university holidays in the UAE with his family who worked there.

Although relatives say he can neither speak nor read Arabic, his PhD supervisor in Durham said he "knew the country very well".
Prof Clive Jones said he was "very much a known face", certainly among the "Emirati political elite".
Many of those he went to the UAE to talk to for his PhD were people he knew personally or had worked for.
This area of the world has clearly piqued his interest.
Both his degree from the University of Bradford and his masters at the University of Exeter explored the Middle East and international relations.
His MA thesis was entitled "What has driven the UAE's military spending since 2001".
What was he doing before his arrest?
Latterly living in Exeter, Hedges has been a PhD student at Durham University since 2015, where he has been researching the effects of the Arab Spring on the Gulf states.
His specific interest is the region's "evolving national security strategy".
Other research interests including civil-military relations, Middle Eastern politics, security studies and political economy are listed in his Durham University biography.
In a joint statement with the University of Exeter, his university said there had been "no evidence whatsoever that Matt was conducting anything other than legitimate academic research" while in the UAE.
His thesis was nearly finished and had been carried out in "full accordance" with its research and ethics procedures, it said.
What work has he done?
Hedges has worked across the Middle East offering analysis on subjects such as defence, security, Gulf politics, international affairs and military capabilities.
His research has covered battlefield technology and defence expenditure in the UAE and political and military policy in the Middle East.
Defense News, Gulf States Newsletter, Military Balance and Defence Procurement International have all published his work.

In March last year he wrote an article for the US-based Middle East Policy Council exploring the future of the Muslim Brotherhood and the Gulf Cooperation Council, of which the UAE is a member.
Hedges has also worked for Dubai thinktank the Institute for Near East and Gulf Military Analysis (INEGMA) and media services company Babylon Communications.
At Optimum Business Consultants he was involved in negotiations for natural resource extraction concessions in South-East Asia and West Africa.

Matthew Hedges is a British student who was studying for his PhD in Middle Eastern studies at Durham University.

The 31-year-old was held in solitary confinement since he was arrested on May 5 at Dubai Airport.

On November 26 Emirati officials announced in a press conference Mr Hedges was to be pardoned with immediate effect.
Why was he being held in the UAE?

Mr Hedges is said to have been seized as he tried to leave the United Arab Emirates (UAE) after a research trip for his PhD in May.

He went to the Arab state to interview sources on its foreign policy as part of research for his PhD thesis.

It’s not clear exactly what he has been accused of, but his colleagues reportedly believe he was accused of spying on the UAE for nearby country Qatar.

Mr Hedges was taken into custody at Dubai Airport then moved to the UAE’s capital Abu Dhabi.

He is reported to have been in solitary confinement for five months after he was accused of spying in Dubai.

The UAE's attorney general has said Mr Hedges was charged with spying for a foreign state, without naming it, and jeopardising the military, economic and political security of the country.

On November 21 the UAE sentenced him to life in prison on charges of spying.

The court sentencing lasted less than five minutes, with no lawyer present for the Brit.

During a press conference where he was released, a video shows that purported to show him claiming to be a captain in M16.
What did his wife say about claims he is a spy?

However, his wife Daniela Tejada has said allegations of spying are untrue.

She says her husband was researching security policies in the region after the pro-democracy movement known as the Arab Spring.

She told The Times: “It breaks my heart that we have been married for nearly two years. I just want him back.”

Matthew had not been harmed physically, but given the circumstances he was suffering from depression and panic attacks, according to his wife who was able to visit him just once in July.

Daniela told The Times: “It was evident he was on medication. He was constantly shaking.

"He clearly did not expect to see me. He seemed to be very cautious about what he said and what he didn’t say, which leads me to think he might have been coerced into saying or not saying certain things.”
Did he send a coded message to the UK government?

Mr Hedges was believed to have delivered a coded message to British officials that his confession was made under duress.

Video footage released by the United Arab Emirates yesterday showed Mr Hedges, 31, admitting to working for M16 in the rank of captain.

But there is no such title within the British intelligence agencies — and experts believe Mr Hedges would have well known this.

What did the Foreign Office say?

A Foreign Office spokeswoman said: "As the Foreign Secretary has made clear, there are limits to what we can say publicly on Matthew's case due to ongoing legal proceedings.

"We are monitoring developments closely and have made the Emirati authorities aware of all our concerns. We continue to do everything we can for Matthew and his family.

"Our staff are in close contact with Matthew's wife, Daniela, offering her all possible support at what we appreciate is a hugely difficult time. We also remain in regular contact with his lawyer.

"It is the longstanding policy of successive UK governments not to comment on intelligence matters."

Matthew Hedges, the academic jailed for spying in the Gulf, dreamt of killing himself in his cell during his imprisonment in the UAE.
On Tuesday he told The Telegraph how he is suffering “severe withdrawal symptoms” after being force-fed a cocktail of drugs by his captors.
Mr Hedges, 31, was held for almost six months in solitary confinement after being arrested at Dubai airport in May on suspicion of spying for MI6.
When he was sentenced to life on November 21 after weeks of interrogation, for the second time his mind was filled with suicidal thoughts, as he dreamt of hanging himself in his cell.
Talking to BBC Radio 4's Today programme about the moment he was sentenced to life during a five-minute hearing, he said: "Total shock. I wasn't able to process that right in the court. It was like an explosion.
"I was expecting to be taken to jail, but instead I was taken back to the interrogation room. I couldn't process that. And then I got interrogated again.
"Then, for the second time, I had suicidal thoughts.
"Before, I was having bad panic attacks, I was struggling, and had a dream I was hanging myself in my cell."

He was finally freed a little over a week ago after receiving a presidential pardon.

But Mr Hedges has now revealed how he is struggling to cope with the random medication given to him during his captivity in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).
His jailors gave him a combination of Xanax and Valium, both highly addictive tranquillisers in the benzodiazepines group. When his jailors feared he had gone too quiet, they then gave him Ritalin, a stimulant used to treat narcolepsy and ADHD.
The combination - which Mr Hedges’ friends say was given without proper medical supervision - has left him reeling in the days since being flown out of the Gulf and back to the UK to be reunited with his wife Daniela Tejada, 27.
Mr Hedges, who had struggled with depression before his arrest, told the Telegraph on Tuesday: “I had been suffering from anxiety and depression and was due to start non-medicated treatment for my mental health upon my return to the UK.
“Those keeping me in the UAE decided they would deal with my panic attacks and bouts of depression by heavily medicating me. I am now having to deal with the consequences of this including quite severe withdrawal symptoms.”

It is understood he is now under medical supervision to help to wean him off the drugs.

Mr Hedges has also disclosed for the first time how he was held in solitary even after being convicted in an Abu Dhabi court. He also told how he was never allowed to go to a proper jail but was instead kept for the duration of his detention in an interrogation room. It is thought he was held at the UAE’s intelligence agency headquarters.
The UAE authorities had been convinced he was spying for MI6 after asking questions about Gulf security for his PhD.
Mr Hedges, an academic at Durham University, believes that a local Emirati, who had fallen foul of the UAE authorities, had made the false spying claim against him in an attempt to curry favour with the ruling elite.
Mr Hedges is now seeking to clear his name and have the spying conviction overturned. He is also considering suing the UAE for false imprisonment and has hired a senior barrister, Rodney Dixon QC, to explore “all legal options and remedies”.
Ms Tejada has been highly critical of the Foreign Office for not fighting harder to negotiate her husband’s release following his arrest six months ago. The family was advised to keep quiet about his plight amid claims Britain did not want to upset its ally.

Jeremy Hunt, the Foreign Secretary, has insisted there is no evidence that Mr Hedges is a spy, and finally took up the case in public in early November, just prior to Mr Hedges being convicted and handed down a life sentence. That caused a huge diplomatic rift between the UK and UAE, with universities voting to boycott campuses in the Emirates.
Alex Younger, the Chief of MI6, said the case was “perplexing”, and denied that Mr Hedges was ever one of his agents.

A spokesperson for the family said that the United Arab Emirates court sentenced the British student Hokiz to life imprisonment for espionage. Reuters reported that Hodziz was engaged in espionage for the British government.

The spokesman told the reporter: "We confirmed that he was sentenced to life imprisonment."

"The trial ended in less than 5 minutes, and even his lawyers did not appear in court."

British Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that he was "stunned and disappointed" against the decision of the United Arab Court.

He said: "Today's judgment is not our expectation of AIA and our trusted partner, U.S., and it is contrary to the previous guarantees."

Matthew Hedges, 31, is a Ph.D. student at Durham University in the UK. He is studying the diplomatic and internal security policies of the United Arab League after the Arab Spring in 2011. After a two-week study trip, he was detained while preparing to leave the airport at Dubai Airport on May 5.

Hojiz was insured on October 29, but continued to be monitored until today’s third trial.

Herkiz's wife, Daniela Tejada, had previously actively rescued her husband. She said last month that although Herz was insured, she could not be happy and had to wait until he was completely free.

Hamad Saif al-Shamsi, the head of the U.S. Attorney General, said earlier this month that Hagez was accused of "spreading a country and undermining the military, political and economic security of the UAE."

Heggiz always denied these allegations. (Translator: Ye Weiwei / Nuclear Manuscript: Yan Siwei) 1071121
