Chinese white-collar workers surprised at construction workers' wages
Updated: 04 Dec 2012

A snapshot from a construction site's salary list went viral on the Internet.
A copy of a construction site's salary statement has recently gone viral on the Internet, and left some Chinese netizens surprised to find out that they were earning less than those they thought worked in the lowest-paying jobs.
In the list of the builders' monthly wages, the team leader earned 10,500 yuan (US$1,685), bricklayers and plasterers were paid 6,600 yuan, and even porters, who only do heavy lifting, were paid 4,200 yuan.
Beijing topped the 2011 list of employees' salaries among Chinese cities with an average monthly salary of 4,672 yuan.
The authenticity of the list has been confirmed by builders working in the construction industry. Their rise in pay is a result of the fact that few young people are willing to become construction workers because of the physical demands of the work, the dirty and sometimes dangerous working conditions and the Chinese social prejudice that the job is inferior.
"The envy expressed by netizens was simply due to their salaries. Most of them won't become construction workers because they know they can't live with the hard work the job requires,” commented an experienced construction worker.
