The world’s first quantum communications satellite has been launched into orbit aboard a Long March-2D rocket. The main task of the Chinese satellite is to potentially secure communications in an age of cyberattacks and global electronic surveillance.

Space exploration
The 600+kg Quantum Experiments at Space Scale (QUESS) satellite took off from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Gobi Desert at 1:40am local time on a two-year mission on Tuesday.

Nicknamed 'Micius', in honor of the 5th century BC Chinese philosopher and scientist, QUESS will be positioned at sun-synchronous orbit, some 600km (373 miles) above the Earth at an angle of 97.79 degrees, allowing it circle our planet once every 90 minutes.

“The newly-launched satellite marks a transition in China’s role – from a follower in classic information technology (IT) development to one of the leaders guiding future IT achievements,” said Pan Jianwei, chief scientist of QUESS project with the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), as quoted by Xinhua.

The satellite has been tasked with testing out a potentially uncrackable communications system. QUESS will explore quantum teleportation by sending out keys from space to ground command using the principle of 'quantum entanglement', an act of fusing two or more particles into complementary 'quantum states'.

In practice, China hopes to send out photons from the satellite to two ground stations separated by about 1,200km (746 miles), which together form one entangled system. Operated by the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the satellite contains a quantum key communicator, a processing unit, a laser communicator, quantum entanglement emitter, and entanglement source to transmit quantum keys to Earth.

Quantum communication encryption is a unique method of encoding the content of a message as quantum keys are theoretically impossible to crack with the system detecting any intrusion attempts. For instance, when two people share an encrypted quantum message, if a third person intercepts it, it will change in an unpredictable way.

China hopes that the experimental quantum encryption programs will be instrumental in addressing information security concerns when the government, military and financial networks are becoming prime targets for espionage.

QUESS is one of the National Space Science Center's 'Strategic Priority Programs'. If QUESS is successful, China hopes to erect an Asian-European quantum key distribution network by 2020, and a global quantum communications network in 2030.

“If China is going to send more quantum communication satellites into orbit, we can expect a global network of quantum communications to be set up around 2030,” said Pan.

Anything Chinese is always inferior. They don't believe in quality; they cut corners everytime, the people who worked on it are hardly motivated.

Ah Timing wears shiny woven silks when all the rest only wear animal skins or coconut leaves, or worst is Ang Moh naked butt.

Ah Thiong made rockets in AC300 when Western Apes sucks thumbs. Ah Thiong traded Silk Roads 130 BC, when Ang Moh's were half Apes. Fleet of hundreds of huge ships sailed most of the globe in 14th century led by Cheng Ho, when Ang Moh got only tiny fishing boats.

Wake up morons!

Ah tiongs machiam pap like to harp on past glories.
We've heard enough of paper invention, gun power and what not.
Live in the present day and not the past my friend

Chinese military strategy is actually not willing to operate aircraft-carriers but rather to sink American carriers to defeat Americans by unbearable losses. Chinese is acknowledged by Russian and NATO to be world # 1 profound and most capable of sinking and defeating carriers in whole world. Even during Vietnam wars, US Carriers had been deployed in avoidance to suffer Chinese strikes and threats.

Ah Thiong from day one, had put in most efforts and resources plotting to neutralize US Carriers and put them to bottom of Oceans.

In BOTH past and present, Ah Thiong surpassed Ang Moh's. Factually.

Ah Thiong own CPU and supercomputer beat USA hands down these days.

50 DF21 missiles and 20 S400 Batteries should do the trick.

Ah tiongs and ching chong wing wongs may be lacking in manners and civics and morals and seldom brush their teeth, and may be fugly sonsabitches and have high sloping foreheads, chinky eyes and mongoloid faces, however this shows that technological advancement makes up for their deficiencies and flaws.and also the ability to make lots of money makes the ching chongs a formidable race.

Definitely better than India who can't even send any man to space yet.

Newer ones are DF-26 replacement for DF-21. Can sink carriers parked inside Guam Naval base and of course SG51 Changi Naval Base. Harder than DF-21 to intercept.

Chinese Navy's carriers are seen as an Excess Luxury Toy, not essential. They are just splashing their huge budget and powerful naval ship building industry. They are make 2 carrier now and they will be launched with the same 6 months span. The fastest record any country had ever launched new carriers.

The build so many airbases within the southern Pacifics already. A network of bases in cluster. Why worry about carriers that are easy targets for sinking?

They are the only people who parked carriers for decades used as children amusement parks and tourism attractions.

That is what carriers are to Chinese - toys!

BEIJING — China launched the world’s first quantum communications satellite from the Gobi Desert early Tuesday, a major step in the country’s bid to be at the forefront of quantum research, which could lead to new, completely secure methods of transmitting information.

Researchers hope to use the satellite to beam communications from space to earth with quantum technology, which employs photons, or particles of light. That type of communication could prove to be the most secure in the world, invulnerable to hacking. Scientists and security experts in many countries are studying the technology.

The satellite is expected to circle the earth every 90 minutes after entering orbit at an altitude of about 310 miles, according to a report by Xinhua, the state news agency. The rocket carrying the satellite took off in darkness early Tuesday from the desert around Jiuquan in Gansu Province, a major site for satellite launches.

BEIJING—A rocket that shot skyward from the Gobi Desert early Tuesday is expected to propel China to the forefront of one of science’s most challenging fields.

It also is set to launch Beijing far ahead of its global rivals in the drive to acquire a highly coveted asset in the age of cyberespionage: hack-proof communications.
