A man has been arrested in southwest China for allegedly conning about 30 girlfriends out of cash after they met on dates on the internet, according to a newspaper report.

Police believe the women were cheated out of nearly 500,000 yuan (HK$600,000) by the man in Chengdu, the Chongqing Evening Post said.

He was a security guard at a property management company, but dated the women posing as a government official, according to the report.

A woman reported him to the police after he borrowed 20,000 yuan to pay for medical expenses, but bought a new iPhone instead and showed it off online.

About six women finally reported him to the police.

The man, 32, whose full name was not given, said he met the women on social media, inviting them to luxury restaurants and giving them expensive gifts in the early stages of their relationship.

He would later start to borrow money, saying he needed cash to see doctors or to invest in projects.

Police said the man had a criminal record.
