Why appoint Phelps and Bolt as YOG ambassadors when they are MIA?

Big names such as Michael Phelps and Usain Bolt were not present at the Youth Olympic Games even though they were appointed as ambassadors.

A disappointed STOMPer Gao_Luck wonders why they were appointed as ambassadors when they could not attend the event.

The STOMPer says:

"8-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and sprint king Usain Bolt were not present at the YOG even though they were appointed as ambassadors of the event.

"Phelps was competing in the Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in California.

"Youth Olympic theme song singer Sean Kingston, was also missing in action at the opening ceremony as he was performing somewhere else.

"In the first place, why appoint these big names as ambassadors or singers when they can't commit.

"The ambassador's role is to encourage and boost the morale of the young participants.

"However their absence would have probably caused disappointment rather then encouragement to the participants."
