NEW DELHI: Police have detained a 99-year-old retired school principal for allegedly raping a 10-year-old girl in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, the Xinhua news agency reported today.
“The father-of-seven was arrested on Saturday in the state capital of Chennai on charges of sexual abuse of the girl, who resides in his neighbourhood," a senior police official said Monday.
Police investigators said the crime came to light when the girl recently complained of abdominal pains and was sent to a doctor for a medical check-up.
The official said the suspect had confessed to the crime.
"He was produced in a court and sent to judicial custody for 14 days. A probe is underway," he added.
