You are almost right. The US armed the Mujahideen as a Cold War tool against Soviet Union, not Taliban, correct. But these Arab fighters (whom later became Taliban) were supported and facilitated by CIA. The CIA delegated the weapons distribution to ISI (the Paki). This is the source of the weapons. The Carter and Reagan administration perpetuated war against the Soviets by supporting Islamic radicalism, supporting arms initially directly to the Mujahideen and later via the Pakis (ISI). The CIA created a hotbed for Islamic radicalism to flourish. The Talibans grew larger and stronger and wrestled control of the country and whatever arms that existed from the Mujahideens. So tell me, is the US responsible for the chaos the Afghans are living with today, for the 2nd time in 50 years?
