Chinese Communist Party expands Xi Jinping’s political power, anointing him ‘core’ leader
Jun Mai
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s political status has been elevated , with the Communist Party referring to him as the “core” of its leadership at the close of a key meeting in Beijing on Thursday.
The move gives him greater influence over the looming top reshuffle of the party late next year.
In a communiqué released after the end of the four-day sixth plenum of the Central Committee, the party called on all members to “closely unite around the party’s Central Committee with Comrade Xi Jinping as the core”, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Analysts said the “core of the leadership” often represented the power of final approval or veto.
Official publication says China needs Mao-like strongman leader, and that Xi fits the bill
The communiqué said the party’s national congress would be held “in the second half of 2017 in Beijing”.
The term “core” was used by late leader Deng Xiaoping in 1989 to describe Mao Zedong, himself and his successor Jiang Zemin.
Analysts told the South China Morning Post earlier that Jiang was described as the “core” in various official documents and coverage, signalling his unchallenged personal authority in the party.
The Chinese Communist Party graft-buster’s big shot at a lasting legacy
Xi’s immediate predecessor, Hu Jintao, was only referred as the “general secretary” but never officially called “the core” of the leadership.
The plenum also adopted two new regulations governing the conduct of senior cadres, and vowed to resolutely address election fraud. Four Central Committee members implicated in corruption probes were also formally expelled from the party at the plenum, according to Xinhua.
