Dear Young NTUC member,
You will probably find it unfamiliar for me to address you as an Young NTUC member. “When did I sign up as one?”, you might ask.
Young NTUC was launched on 30th April 2005. Being the official youth wing of the Labour Movement in Singapore, we cater to the needs of any NTUC member below the age of 35 years old.
Since 2005, Young NTUC has grown to be the largest and most vibrant youth movement in Singapore. Our 155,000 members, including you, have joined us in programmes like our National Day celebrations, May Day concerts, sports events and more.
Young NTUC in 2010
2010 was a fruitful year for Young NTUC.
In March, we organized the first ever eco-run on Pulau Ubin called Run 350. 350 is the parts per million measurement of carbon in the air that scientists believe is the pre-requisite for humanity’s sustenance. We are now at about 390ppm, and this worries us. Hence, Young NTUC organized Run 350 to increase awareness of this fact and the response from our members was simply great!
For May Day, our members gathered at Downtown East for the annual celebrations. This year, the Labour Movement’s key focus is to help contribute to raising overall productivity in Singapore. Not a simple effort, it requires the concerted hard work of all workers, unions, Government agencies and employers in Singapore and is manifested in our “battle cry” – Cheaper, Better, Faster!
On National Day, 7,000 members joined us at the Promontory@Marina Bay for the best seats to watch the National Day Parade and the spectacular fireworks live. This is the fourth celebration that we have brought to Singaporeans and we will continue to do so, working closely with the NDP Committee.
Young NTUC was also involved in the first ever Youth Olympic Games. From the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame, to volunteering during the Games, many of our activists took time off work to train or rehearse for their contributions. We also helped to produce Voices of Singapore 2010, a music CD in support of the Games.
We capped the year off with Building Dreams, a sandcastle event promoting the importance of spending time with our families with a charity fundraising for Thye Hua Kwan Moral Home for the Disabled.
Over the year, many of our activists were also involved in volunteering their time to help the needy in Singapore and overseas. The recipients included low income or retrenched workers and their families, orphaned children and many others. Our activists are also involved in environmental advocacy as well as animal concern programmes, amongst many other things. Many of our Team Young NTUC affinity groups have also done well, in areas like sports or special interests like photography and the performing arts.
Young NTUC in 2011
In keeping with tradition, we intend to do more and even better in 2011!
This is a special year for all of us in the Labour Movement as it is the 50th anniversary of the NTUC’s formation. Young NTUC, in support of the 50th anniversary celebrations will organise a series of large scale programmes in support of this special occasion, beginning with Run 350.
There are many other programmes that we are planning to roll out and we will keep you updated. Remember, Young NTUC can only be vibrant and strong with active participation from you. In the meantime, you can visit our website www.youngntuc.org.sg anytime for more updates on our programmes.
Happy New Year.
Cheers!
