Caught for extortion attempt

A 26-YEAR-OLD man has been arrested by the police for attempting to extort $100,000 from a local car service centre. The suspect was arrested at around 11pm on Thursday night along Tanjong Katong Road.

The man had called and sent SMSes threatening to harass the customers of the service centre unless he was paid $100,000.

The manager of the service centre lodged a report with the police at about 1pm on Thursday, which led to the suspect's arrest later at night.

The mobile phone used to send the threatening messages was seized as a case exhibit. The man will be charged in court on Saturday.

For putting a person in fear in order to commit extortion, under Section 385 of the Penal Code, Chapter 224, he can be sentenced to an imprisonment term between two to five years and with caning, if convicted.

SINGAPORE: Police have arrested a 26-year-old man who tried to extort S$100,000 from a car service centre by threatening to harass the centre's customers.

The manager of the Borneo Motors service centre told police he had received numerous phone calls and SMSes from an unknown man who threatened to harass his customers and tarnish the centre's reputation if he was not given the money.

Police tracked down the subscriber of the mobile phone number which was used to send the threats but he wasn't the perpetrator.

Police then managed to trace and arrest the suspect at Tanjong Katong Road after they pursued other leads.

A mobile phone which was used to send the threatening messages to the victim was also seized as evidence.

It was not known if the mobile phone was stolen from the subscriber.

The suspect will be charged on Saturday in court.

If convicted, he can be jailed for between two and five years and caned.
