The Cathay Cineplex at Handy Road, one of Singapore’s oldest cinemas, will cease operations from June 27. In this image taken on Feb 16, 1953, people queue outside the theatre to buy tickets for a Chinese New Year blockbuster. https://str.sg/wuAj

1953.... shameless evil BE loser gave up defending Singapore and surrendered to the Japanese....

can't even defend this tiny island and given up, which they monopoly opium trade in SEA before the war.... and after the war shameless return to rule with opium trade, prostitution, gambling and gangsterism....

Singapore must learn to look at this part of history and start demolish all evil BE street names, Statues. Malaysia did that in 1961 after became independence...

Shameless PAP still lick evil BE balls, or balless to change... Fuck Lee administration...

Cathay's founder, Loke Wan Tho, must be kicking in his grave.

Most likely will develop into a condo and allow wealthy foreigners to invest. Nobody has expected within a short span of 30 years, Singapore has turned many heritage site into shit for the rich to exploit.

Last time go and watch movie always buy last row $2 seats and just rubba rubba and smooch with gf......

So sad. Cathay stillmhas better cinemas. Fuck pigeonhole golden village

Who can still remember that there was a small A&W next to the cinema?

These cinema multiplex buildings in expensive areas cannot last in this day and age. Especially now got streaming channels. Hope the use the Cathay building for something meaningful

The6 can have live concert for locsl bands. Or even foreign ones.
Some concert halls in london are about same size. Its where bands like sex pistols, thin lizzy, queen started.

(dead) old fart used to work for jap radio (morse code) intercepts there during ww2. should be preserved as a monument.
