A man gambled away his one-month salary at the casino and at wit’s ends, he decided to rob another man and even hit him.
He was yesterday jailed for 3 1/2 years and ordered to be given 12 strokes of the cane.
The man who committed the crime is Malaysian national Suresh Kannan, 33, and the victim, Indonesian national Witasyah Siah, 62.
On June 1, Suresh went for a game of roulette at the Marina Bay Sands casino but lost his salary of $3,000.
As he was about to leave, he saw Mr Siah changing money for chips at the cashier and followed him.
In the wee hours early the next morning, at 5.10am, Mr Siah left the casino and went to take a taxi home.
Suresh followed, on his motorbike.
The taxi dropped Mr Siah at Compassvale Link in Sengkang, at his daughter’s home.
He took the lift to the 7[SUP]th[/SUP] floor.
Suresh followed, in another lift.

When Mr Siah reached his daughter’s home and pressed the doorbell, Suresh grabbed him from behind and covered his mouth.
He dragged Mr Siah away in an arm-lock.
At the staircase, Suresh used his helmet to keep beating Mr Siah on his back, and at least one time on his head.
Then, he ran, taking Mr Siah’s bag, which contained his clothes, a passport, the gambling chips worth $65, flight tickets and $20.
On June 10, he was arrested.
Suresh could have been jailed for up to 14 years with not less than 12 strokes of the cane for robbery.
Since Singapore opened the two casinos in 2010, it has resulted in more gambling-related crimes.
In a country where wages have remained stagnant and Singapore today has the second-highest debt in Asia, this has caused some to turn to gambling.
