Poker cards found with excessive amounts of formaldehyde: survey
Officials urged the public to be careful when playing poker games in the upcoming Chinese New Year holiday as nearly 20 percent of randomly tested playing cards currently on the market were found to contain excessive amounts of formaldehyde, a possible cancer causing agent that is harmful to humans, according to a survey released yesterday.
"A total of five out of the 30 tested poker cards were found to contain an above-standard amount of free-formaldehyde," said Huang Lai-ho, Deputy Director General of the Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection (BSMI) said yesterday in a press conference to unveil the survey results in Taipei.
The national standard allows 75 ppm (part per million) of the chemical in paper products but many of these randomly purchased ones were found far exceeding the threshold. One of them even contained 612 ppm of the chemical, which is way above the safety level, he noted.
Inhaling and touching high levels of formaldehyde residue can cause skin allergies, Huang noted. The World Health Organization has also listed formaldehyde as one of the possible leading causes of cancer-related death, he said.
Each of the manufacturers of the playing cards that failed to meet national standards have been asked to recall their products or they will be punished with a fine, he noted.
He urged consumers to purchased only those cards with clear labels and do not play with the ones with an uncommon chemical odor. Those who play the cards were also advised to wash their hands after the games and keep them away from the reach of younger children.
Meanwhile, the BSMI yesterday also released its survey on red-colored underwear, a hot-selling product during the Lunar New Year since Taiwanese believe red is the color of prosperity and blessings, and wearing underclothes in that color can bring good fortune especially in gambling games.
??The total number of 21 red-colored underwear found in a local market all passed the checks on possible harmful chemicals, but three of them were found failing to meet national standards on durability testing and discolored easily.
