SINGAPORE: There were 191 cases of the elderly falling victim to crime in the first half of this year.

This is a 13 percent decline from the 219 cases for the same period last year.

Common crimes committed against those 60 and above include robbery, snatch theft and cheating.

80-year-old Madam Tan Geok Eng was one of the victims.

The Redhill Close resident was told to support a light bulb while a man posing as an electrician fixed her wiring.

The man then made off with $12,000 worth of her cash and jewellery.

Police advise the public to check the identity of strangers who request entry into their houses.

They also warn against keeping large amounts of money and valuables at home.
