Carpenter jailed for setting colleague on fire
Published on Oct 31, 2011

A carpenter who splashed thinner on a colleague and set him on fire was jailed four years on Monday.

Kuu Siau Lam, 65, pleaded guilty to causing grievous hurt to Malaysian Kee Yau Chong, 23, at Senang Crescent in Bedok on June 11.

A district court heard that Mr Kee had accidentally bumped into Kuu at their workplace, SH Indeco, and walked away.

Kuu got angry and started scolding and abusing the victim for not apologising to him. A heated argument ensued.

He then went to the pantry area and filled a metal mug with thinner and approached the victim to continue arguing with him.

A man was set on fire by his colleague and was disfigured as a result.

Ji Yao Chong (age 23) had only been working for three weeks when he got into a tiff with another colleague, Gu Xiao Lan (65, carpenter) at 10.38am on 11 June this year.

The tiff came about after Ji accidentally bumped into Gu and walked off without apologising. Gu, furious with the young man, began swearing loudly at him.

Ji became enraged with Gu's aggressive behaviour and began quarreling with Gu.

At this point, Gu walked to the pantry and poured thinner into a cup. As the two quarreled, Gu unexpectedly splashed the cup of thinner onto the young man, then lit him afire with a lighter.
The young man was instantly wreathed in flames.

Meanwhile, Gu left the scene nonchalantly and cycled away calmly. He was arrested later at a coffeeshop in Toa Payoh after the police carried out an island-wide manhunt.

Those who witnessed the fight described the young man being covered in flames as he staggered around setting fire to flammable objects around him.

A female executive had also rushed forward to pat the flames from the man while he tried to take off his burning clothes.

As a result of Gu's attack, Ji suffered burns on 28% of his body including on his face, neck, torso and arms. He was warded for 46 days in the hospital and has been disfigured by burn scars.

Four fingers on his left hand have also been warped and he can no longer straighten them.

Gu remained unrepentant in court and was reprimanded for his aggressive behaviour. He has since been sentenced to 4 years in jail.
